Throughout the whole year there are things to entertain and interest visitors to the Languedoc. This is a region so rich in culture that it pays to visit out of the usual tourist season in order to experience some of the diverse and original events and festivals that take place all through the calendar. There is something different to see and do whenever you choose to visit.
Many villages still celebrate Easter in a traditional way, so keep a look out for local events if you are in the region at Easter-time.
In May there is Cap d’Agde’s annual Sand Sculpture Festival.
Carcassonne Jazz Week in April sees many concerts performed in the churches and chapels of Carcassonne.
In May the International Extreme Sports Festival comes to Montpellier.
The Languedoc is alive with activity during the summer season. There are many different festivals highlighting musical, artistic and gastronomic talents and regional traditions.
During June the whole area surrounding Béziers hosts a Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music) with a whole range of musical styles from rock to classical. Concerts are staged in the towns and villages in the Béziers Méditerranée region. Check at the local Office de Tourisme for a full programme of events.
Also in June the Fête de la Saint-Pierre takes over Valras-Plage for 3 days of processions, entertainment and music.
During June and July it is the much-acclaimed Montpellier Dance Festival which spans 16 days and holds performances at different venues throughout the city.
In Béziers during July there is the Festa d’Oc which is a big celebration of the region with music, dancing, fireworks, and cabaret. Entry is free.
The Fête Nationale (Bastille Day) on 14th July is a national celebration during which everyone enjoys music, dancing and fireworks. Check locally for details.
In August the Féria de Béziers is a 5-day extravaganza of Bullfighting and local tradition.
Throughout the whole summer there are numerous large and smaller events all over the Languedoc. There is plenty to keep the whole family happy, from sporting events to concerts. Call into the local tourist office for more information.
In November Montpellier hosts its annual 3-day wine festival which celebrates the wines of the Languedoc.
October is the Festival of the Vin Primeur in which local wine producers promote their wine and offer tastings all over the region.
During October and November Montpellier hosts the International Mediterranean Film Festival with loads of film screenings and movie-based events.
In January Perpignan plays host to the traditional Cavalcade of Kings Festival.
Nîmes has a Flamenco Festival in January.
January also sees a celebration of the truffle in the town of Uzes.
In February it is Carnival Season throughout the whole region.
Also in February Nîmes hosts the Festival of British Film and Cinema.
Vinisud, the festival of wines and spirits of Southern France takes place in February in Montpellier.
